Zanios History
In 1956, George Zanios decided to move from Mason City , Iowa to Albuquerque , New Mexico so that he could start an egg distribution company. Over fifty years later, Southwest Egg Company has become Zanios Foods Inc, and is one of the fastest growing, most dynamic foodservice distributors in America . Still family owned and operated, Zanios Foods strives daily to live up to our mission and serve our customer's needs.

After starting Southwest Egg Company in 1956, George ran the company until 1973 when his son Jim took over the reins. At that time, Southwest Egg was just starting to diversify into areas other than eggs. We were selling fresh poultry and some fresh beef items to cover the needs of a few accounts that wanted to buy those items from our company through the relationships that the family had built. At that same time, Jim was approached by the NIFDA buying group and was asked to become a member. Seeing the long-term benefits for company growth, Jim joined NIFDA. That relationship still exists today, as NIFDA, through several mergers, is now UniPro Foodservice. UniPro is the largest buying group in the country with 2003 overall sales of over $26 billion. Along with all of our fellow UniPro member distributors nationwide, we are able to blanket America with uniformity in pricing and consistency in quality of products and services. That decision to join NIFDA was key in taking Zanios Foods from the local egg and poultry company to being able to service other areas of business. Making the decision to become a broad line distributor allowed Zanios Foods to have continual growth over the next thirty years and expand our marketing area. Now Zanios Foods is a regional company that can service our market better than any of our competitors.

Zanios Foods offers a complete line of quality food products under nationally-branded labels, as well as full beverage and chemical programs. Zanios Foods also maintains its own USDA-inspected processing plant for fresh meats, and an FDA fresh seafood cutting facility. We also offer the finest in fresh fruits and vegetables through our Membership in Pro*Act the nations largest produce procurement group.

Since 1973, Jim Zanios and the Zanios Family have continually invested in their company and their employees, always trying to make this the best food service distributor in New Mexico . Their goal is to take Zanios Foods to even higher levels and continually provide for the needs of our loyal customer base.
